Department of Applied English

    In response to the educational goals and economic-trade development of the nation, the program aims to educate and develop language professionals, furnishing them with business knowledge, computer and information application skills, proper work ethics, and a modern global perspective.

    The curriculum and instruction put equal emphasis on foreign language training and business competencies and skills. The foreign language domain integrates cultural literacy and language teaching. The commerce-based, professional training program blends theory and practice, laying a solid foundation for students by means of practical business training and applying information software. Employing instruction media and audio-lingual materials, the instruction process adapts natural, direct teaching methods to help students acquire listening-speaking abilities as well as upgrade their proficiency level in writing and speaking. Meantime, as experience is the best teacher, students are encouraged to undertake practical training in foreign companies, trade and financial institutions or overseas study.

    All faculty members possess a doctoral degree in a diversity of specializations, including English teaching, language education, linguistics, and literature.

    In the wake of Taiwan’s entry into the World Trade Organization and the introduction of English in the elementary schools throughout the island, our graduates will find the job market getting friendlier than ever. They may seek employment in education, trade companies, mass media, travel agencies, the information industry, the foreign service, translation agencies and may other professions. English proficiency tests, graduate study, and civil service exams provide equally bright career paths for those interested and well prepared.

Graduate School of Applied English

    The program aims to inspire and develop foreign language professionals, helping them to acquire competencies in conducting linguistic studies and applying state-of-the-art theory and knowledge in various professional fields.

    The curriculum and instruction feature three aspects:

1. Westrive to help localize the theory and practice of English teaching;

2. With language proficiency serving as the basis, students obtain professional knowledge from a variety of fields offered, such as: science & technology, economics - trade, the humanities, law & politics, journalism, information science, and the like;

3. Taking advantage of linguistic theories, students acquire language analysis abilities, broaden their knowledge concerning the nature of languages, and extend their practicalapplications.

    The graduate curriculum is comprised of three major categories: required courses, core specialized courses, and research instruments. The required courses mainly include advanced courses required of foreign languages majors. Under the rubric of the core specialized courses are electives appropriate for the program’s three specializations: English teaching, translation, and applied linguistics. Meantime, students study research instruments that emphasize research methods and research writing skills.

    Graduates may find employment as English translators, international conference interpreters, English teachers, English multi-media software designers, and many other professions. Advanced studies at the doctoral level are feasible and advisable both locally and abroad, in fields such as English, translation, and linguistics-related disciplines. Graduates may serve as language professionals in diverse fields, including: teaching, research, and business functions, depending on individual interests and needs.
